Ruth Amos invented The Stair Steady as part of her GCSE engineering course at just 15 years old.

Under the instruction of her teacher, Ruth was tasked with creating a mobility aid capable of helping people travel up and down their stairs safely. Lo and behold, The Stair Steady came into being!

This mechanical device comprises a sliding rail and handle that supports the user’s weight when pushed. It can help those with long-term or short-term disabilities, injuries, or conditions steady themselves as they conquer the stairs.

The Stair Steady moves freely when pushed but locks when weight is applied, meaning users aren’t restricted by time. With The Stair Steady, you can take as long as you need.

The beauty of this mobility aid is that once you’ve reached the top or bottom, The Stair Steady folds away neatly into your handrail. Regaining independence without dramatically altering your home is a big thing for some, and The Stair Steady gives you more mobility with greater flexibility.

Since its creation in 2006, Ruth Amos and The Stair Steady have gone on to win numerous awards. The British Healthcare Trade Association named The Stair Steady the ‘Best Established Product’, with Amos herself winning the prestigious ‘Young Engineer for Britain’ award.

Almost 17 years later, The Stair Steady continues to help customers around the globe. It is now an international brand that connects with mobility specialists, like Millercare, to get its products into the hands and homes of those who need them most.

From the beginning, The Stair Steady’s main purpose has been to support those with reduced mobility. With millions of reasons a person might face physical limitations, The Stair Steady has such a versatile market.

It’s not just for the elderly: The Stair Steady can be used to support the young and old alike on their journey towards independence. It can be part of a physical rehabilitation program for recovery from strokes, amputations or head injuries.

If you’re facing short-term reduced mobility from surgery or injury, The Stair Steady can help you get back on your feet. Or, they can support patients undergoing medical treatments that weaken the body, like chemotherapy.

Long-term degenerative conditions like Parkinson's or Multiple Sclerosis reduce physical function. But The Stair Steady can lengthen independence by providing a safe, stable way to climb stairs.

They’re also an excellent stabilising tool for those with balance and coordination problems.

The Stair Steady can help people with obesity or visual impairments navigate their homes with greater ease.

We’re proud to offer The Stair Steady to our customers with installation by Millercare professionals. Depending on your home’s layout, we’ll fit The Stair Steady adjacent to your existing handrail, with a supporting arm that folds away at the top and bottom of your staircase.

The Stair Steady was designed to help you get back on your feet, and that’s exactly what it will do. If you’re ready to challenge yourself and regain independence, visit our nearest showroom for a no-obligation survey.
