How To Use A Zimmer Frame: Step By Step

Date Published: October 29th, 2022

Zimmer frame or a walking frame is an extremely useful piece of mobility equipment that provides stability, balance and an extra helping hand to people with mobility issues. It is extremely popular amongst elderly people, as it provides support whilst getting from A to B. It is also a useful piece of equipment for children and adults who are recovering from surgery and need help. If you have recently purchased or been prescribed a walking frame, then you might be wondering how you use it. In this blog post, we will talk you through how to use a zimmer frame step by step.

1. Find the Right Zimmer Frame for you

If you are purchasing a Zimmer frame, then you should consider which would be the best one for you. There are lots of products out there that differ in style, size and capabilities. Consider the following before purchasing a Zimmer frame:

  • What size do you need the frame to be?
  • What are the weight requirements that you need to consider?
  • What is your budget?
  • Do you want a Zimmer frame with wheels?
  • Do you want a frame that is foldable or non-foldable?
  • Will you be using your walking frame indoors or outdoors?

2. Adjustments

Once you have got your Zimmer frame, make the appropriate adjustments to make it specific for your needs. This might involve adjusting the heights. To find the right height measurements, ensure that your hands are in a comfortable position on the grips, and adjust where necessary.

3. Figure out your Route

Where do you plan to walk to? Have a clear goal in mind to avoid hassle and unnecessary movement.

4. Move Frame

Place both of your hands on the gripped handlebar. Lift up the frame slightly and move it in front of you to a distance you are comfortable with. Put all of your weight onto the frame and step forward.

Repeat until you are at the place you need to be. Zimmer frames can take a while to get used to, so take your time and practice, and you will be able to pick up your pace over time.

How To Use A Zimmer Frame With Wheels

A zimmer frame with wheels or a rollator is easy to use, follow the steps below:

1. Adjustments

Similarly to a non-wheeled Zimmer frame, make adjustments to the height of it if needed, for comfort and safety purposes.

2. Think About Destination

Think about where you plan to walk to, this can make your journey easier if you have a clear view of where you are walking to in your mind.

3. Get in position

Get into the correct position. So, your hands should both be holding onto the handlebar, with your fingers near the brakes. Ensure that both feet are balanced on the floor.

4. Move Zimmer Frame

Move your Zimmer frame forward to a distance you are comfortable with. It is easier to move at a quicker pace with a rollator, however, you should start slow and build your way up with speed until you are comfortable using the frame.

How To Carry Things With a Zimmer Frame

If you want to carry things with a Zimmer frame, you can purchase a carry basket or net to put your things in. This is ideal for when you are out and about, and you want to pop in shops. The nets that we sell at Millercare are easy to attach and detach from your frames and are spacious.

How To Climb Steps With a Zimmer Frame

You can use a Zimmer frame to help you get up and down the stairs. However, you should never use a rollator, as this can be very dangerous. If you are in a situation where there is no accessible route (ramp) then you should switch your mobility aid to a walking stick or seek help from someone.

Going Upstairs

  1. Put the crossbar of the Zimmer frame next to your side.
  2. Lift the two front legs of the frame on the step you want to climb.
  3. Securely grip the walker with one hand, and with the other hand place it on the handrail of the stairs. Ensure your weight is spread evenly across the handrail and the walker.
  4. Take a step upwards with the leg you feel is the strongest, and you are the most comfortable with.
  5. Bring the other leg up on the step.
  6. Move your frame up to the step above and repeat.

Going Downstairs

  1. Place the crossbar of your frame next to you.
  2. Put the back two legs of your frame next to your side.
  3. Grip the walker with one hand, and grip the handrail for the steps with the other hand.
  4. Step down with your stronger leg, and then your weaker leg. Your weight should be equally distributed across the frame and hand bar.
  5. Move the frame down to the next step, and repeat the process.
