Perching stools are a great aid to have in your home if you struggle with standing up for too long, whether that is due to pain or fatigue. Perching stools can be used in all rooms in your home. For example, you could sit on it whilst you are washing the dishes, brushing your teeth or cooking. Generally, these stools help to improve your day-to-day life and can make it easier to complete daily household chores. If you are looking to purchase one of these aids, you might be wondering how to use a perching stool, and we will tell you in this blog post!

Benefits of Perching Stools

Here are some of the benefits of using a perching stool:

  • Pain relief: if you struggle to stand up for long periods of time and it becomes painful, a perch stool can help you relieve the pain without having to interrupt the task you are working on.
  • Improved posture: Using a perching stool helps to keep good posture, which can help to relieve tension in your body.
  • Affordable: Perching stools are affordable, and there is one for all budgets. You can make a small improvement to your life without having to break the bank.

Instructions

There are different types of perching stools on the market. Various brands have their own design. So, before using it, you should read the instructions or manual to ensure you know how to properly use it. The manual will include information on how to adjust the tool, the proper method of cleaning it and the floor surfaces it can stay steady on. It is important to read this information so that you can safely use the stool.

The instructions below are taken from an NHS document.

  1. Place stool on the floor
Firstly, you should place the stool you will be using on the floor. This should be an even surface, so it does not wobble. Read about the surfaces that the stool can stay steady on in the manual.
  2. Place hands on the armrest
To safely sit down, place one hand on the armrest and the other hand on the opposite armrest. This balances your weight between both sides of the chair and prevents you from tipping over.
  3. Lower yourself down
Now you can begin to slowly lower yourself down on the chair. Ensure both hands are on the armrest and you do not topple over. Whilst you are sitting down, you should refrain from reaching down to the floor or side, as this could cause you to tip over on the chair.

How to adjust a perching stool

Most perching stools available to purchase are height adjustable. This allows you to use the stool for various purposes and is particularly useful when adjusting your height for countertops in the kitchen.

You can raise and lower the height of the stool by changing the length of the legs. This is usually done with a pin-clip fixture. Pins can be pushed inwards and outwards to alter the height. Ensure that all legs of the stool are equal.

Can you use a perching stool in the shower?

As previously mentioned, every perching stool is different. Generally, you can use one of these stools in the shower, as the feet of the chair can grip most even surfaces. However, you should always check the manual which comes with the stool to be on the safe side.

At Millercare, we sell an extensive range of seating. You can check out our range of bathroom seating to find something specialised. Bathroom seating can help keep you safe whilst you are showering or bathing, which can be difficult and dangerous without the correct aid.

How to Choose a Perching Stool

There are lots of perching tools on the market, and all have differences. It can be difficult to choose which is the model for you. Consider the following when you are making your decision:

  • Do you have any style preferences? There are chairs of all different sizes, shapes and colours. Find one that matches what you are looking for, and will blend in with your home.
  • Do you need the chair to be height adjustable? We highly recommend that you purchase a height-adjustable stool so you can use it around your house and work at different surface levels.
  • Do you have any weight requirements? Check out the maximum user weight in the specifications of the perching stools you are looking at.
  • What extent of back support do you need? If you suffer from back problems, you might want to consider purchasing a perching stool that has back support, as this will help with posture and pain management.
