With the summer months slowly drawing to an end and the nights becoming darker and colder, it’s essential that you’re well prepared (especially in the current climate). You can prep for the colder months in a number of ways, but if you own a mobility scooter, you may want to ensure it’s ready to tackle some of the colder (and wetter) weather conditions. Below are our top tips and tricks for preparing your mobility scooter for winter.
Check Your Tyres
As they are the only part of the scooter to touch the ground, they need to be strong, stable, correctly inflated and in excellent condition at all times. Winter weather can sometimes deflate mobility scooter wheels, so you’ll need to check them regularly and replace any tyres that are damaged or worn. When it comes to icy conditions, you need to make sure the tyres can grip, so check for any damage to the tread when possible.
Stay Visible
With nights becoming darker and darker, we’re soon to have fewer hours of sunlight than in the summer months. With this in mind, it’s important to stay visible when on your mobility scooter. This can be done in a number of ways, including adding a safety light, wearing high visibility clothing, or adding reflectors to the vehicle so that car lights reflect off you.
Prepare for wet weather
The British weather is always temperamental, but one thing is for sure: the winter months bring wet conditions. It’s important to keep a waterproof coat at hand as well as waterproof mobility scooter accessories. This will ensure that no water tampers with the electricals, and will hold off rusting. When it comes to storage, ensure that the scooter is either under a waterproof cover, in a garage, or secured in a dry safe space.

Before winter well and truly hits, it’s worth getting your scooter serviced. Not only will this give you peace of mind, but it will ensure that your scooter is roadworthy, and is fit for harsher weather conditions. It will also highlight any issues with the battery.
