Sports Wheelchairs FAQs

What are sports wheelchairs?

Sports wheelchairs offer disabled athletes more agility and speed in sports like racing, basketball or tennis.

Using sports wheelchairs can make engaging in these activities more enjoyable, as they are specifically designed to increase stability and manoeuvrability.

At Millercare, we stock a range of specialised sports wheelchairs, each providing different levels of balance, strength and speed. Which you choose will depend on your physical attributes (like height and weight) and the sport you’re engaging in.

How are sports wheelchairs different to regular wheelchairs?

Sports wheelchairs are in their category because they are manufactured using different techniques and materials. When compared to regular wheelchairs, you can see just how different they are.

  • Sports chairs often have ultra-lightweight frames (made from titanium or aluminium) to make them easily manoeuvrable.

  • They may have significantly reduced armrests or footrests (or none at all!)

  • The frame may be non-folding for extra solidity.

  • Some models have anti-tipper wheels to prevent the chair from tipping over backwards.

  • Their centre of gravity may be lower than regular wheelchairs to minimise the risk of falling off.

  • They may come with straps for security and smaller, slanted wheels for improved control.

What types of sports can be played using sports wheelchairs?

Disabled athletes can engage in a wide variety of wheelchair sports!

To ensure no player has an advantage, there are often standardised rules for which wheelchairs the participants can use. They will likely be checked before a game to ensure they follow the rules, the same way equipment like tennis rackets, balls and rackets are.

Some activities where sports wheelchairs are used include:

  • Netball

  • Fencing

  • Tennis

  • Curling

  • Basketball

  • Dance

  • Football

  • Rugby

Do active wheelchairs require maintenance?

Maintenance is crucial to keeping your sports wheelchair in excellent condition.

Regularly inspect your backrest, strapping and cushions to ensure comfort.

Checking your tire wear and pressure will let you know whether it’s time to replace your wheels or get them seen by a professional: do they lock in place? Do your casters spin freely? If not, it may be time to give them a good cleaning.

Are sports wheelchairs covered by insurance?

No, Millercare does not offer insurance for our range of sports wheelchairs.

However, we can offer you insurance on your manual wheelchair, mobility scooter or powerchair. Get extra peace of mind with our accidental damage, theft and vandalism coverage with Mark Bates insurance from Millercare.

Can I try out a sports wheelchair before I purchase one?

You may be able to test a sports wheelchair if you visit one of our in-store locations. Speak to a staff member, and they’ll help you find the perfect sports wheelchair.
